Fri 19 January 2024:
As part of an ongoing antitrust action, the European Commission called for input from stakeholders on concessions made by Apple to open up its tap-and-go mobile payment systems on Friday.
Apple has pledged to give third-party mobile wallet and payment service providers access to and interoperability with the Near Field Communication (NFC) functionality on iOS devices free of charge. This access would be granted without the obligation to use Apple Pay or Apple Wallet, according to the European Commission.
The commitments also encompass additional features, such as defaulting of preferred payment apps, and access to authentication features.
These commitments will remain in effect for ten years, and implementation will be subject to monitoring by a designated trustee, responsible for reporting regularly to the Commission.
In 2022, the European Union (EU) competition enforcer raised concerns with Apple over its dominant position in the market for mobile wallets on iOS devices. Issues included limiting NFC access for third-party mobile wallet app developers, and potential exclusionary conduct. These could impede competition in the market for mobile wallets on iOS devices, breaching certain EU laws.
