Thu 20 February 2025:

The digital revolution has transformed nearly every aspect of our lives, and shopping is no exception. Online shopping, once a novelty, has become a dominant force in retail, offering unparalleled convenience and a vast selection of goods at our fingertips.

From the comfort of our homes, we can browse countless products, compare prices, and have purchases delivered directly to our doors, all with a few clicks.

Online shopping in the EU continued to expand in 2024, statistical authority Eurostat said on Thursday.

Last year, 77% of internet users bought or ordered goods or services for personal use online, jumping 59% from a decade ago, in 2014.

The highest percentages of internet users who made online purchases last year were in Ireland (96%), the Netherlands (94%), and Denmark (91%).

Bulgaria had the lowest share at 57%, followed by Italy and Romania, both at 60%.

The most frequently purchased goods online in 2024 were clothing, shoes, and accessories, fast-food and catering services, and cosmetics and wellness products.

This explosion in e-commerce is driven by several factors. Firstly, the sheer convenience is undeniable. No more battling traffic, searching for parking, or navigating crowded stores. Online shopping allows us to shop 24/7, fitting it seamlessly into our busy schedules. Secondly, the variety is unmatched. Online retailers offer a global marketplace, connecting consumers with products they might never find locally. Whether you’re looking for a niche item, a hard-to-find brand, or simply want to explore different options, the internet offers a treasure trove of possibilities.

Furthermore, online shopping often provides competitive pricing. With easy price comparison tools and frequent sales, consumers can often find better deals online than in brick-and-mortar stores. The ability to read reviews from other customers also empowers shoppers to make informed decisions, increasing the likelihood of a satisfying purchase.

However, the world of online shopping is not without its challenges. Security concerns, such as data breaches and fraudulent websites, remain a valid worry. It’s crucial to shop from reputable retailers and take precautions to protect personal information. Shipping costs and delivery times can also be a factor, especially for international purchases. And, of course, the inability to physically touch and examine a product before buying can sometimes lead to disappointment.
