Thu 18 July 2024:

A former CIA employee, Sue Mi Terry, has been charged by US prosecutors for allegedly spying for South Korea in exchange for luxury gifts, according to the US Department of Justice. Terry, who worked for the US government from 2001 to 2011, began her “secret agent” activities in 2013, passing confidential information to South Korea and lobbying on its behalf for a decade.

In return, Terry received meals at Michelin-starred restaurants and high-end items, including expensive handbags. Her South Korean handlers also secretly sent $37,000 to a think tank where she worked. Security camera footage shows Terry receiving luxury gifts from South Korean officials.

The indictment accuses Terry of failing to register as a foreign agent and conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Her lawyer, Lee Wolosky, denied the charges, calling them “unfounded” and asserting that Terry was an independent analyst who was critical of the South Korean government.

The Council on Foreign Relations has placed Terry on unpaid administrative leave and is cooperating with the investigation. The South Korean National Intelligence Service is in contact with its US counterpart regarding the charges.
