FIFA LIFTS BAN ON RUSSIAN UNDER-17 FOOTBALL TEAMS

Wed 04 October 2023:

The world football governing body, FIFA, has partially lifted its ban on Russia competing in international football matches by allowing its under-17 girls and boys teams to take part in tournaments, a move that is likely to irk authorities in Ukraine and other parts of Europe.

Teams from Russia were banned from international football after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

“This is conditional on these teams playing under the name of the ‘Football Union of Russia’ rather than Russia, in the absence of their national flag, their national anthem, their national-team kit and equipment, and instead playing in neutral colours,” FIFA said in a statement.

The move follows a similar relaxation on Russian youth teams last week by Europe’s football governing body, UEFA.

Ukraine, England and Denmark are among several nations that have said they will not play any youth teams from Russia despite UEFA’s decision.
