FIVE PALESTINIANS KILLED, 62 INJURED AS ISRAELI FORCES RAID JENIN CAMP

At least five Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli military raid on Jenin in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The ministry identified the victims as Khaled Darwish, 21; Qassam Sariya, 19; Ahmed Saqr, 15; and Qassam Faisal Abu Sirriya, 29.

The fifth victims has yet to be identified.

The number of Palestinians injured rose to 66.

The Israeli military said the raid was to arrest two suspects and that Israeli soldiers came under fire which resulted in a “massive exchange of fire”.

One of the suspects they were after was “the son of an imprisoned Hamas leader”, Al Jazeera’s Imran Khan said from West Jerusalem.

As the Israeli military vehicles were exiting the camp, the army’s statement said, “a military vehicle was hit by an explosive device, damaging the vehicle”, after which military helicopters shot towards the gunmen to help the forces exit.

Video footage verified by the Sanad agency showed an Israeli helicopter launching a rocket on the camp and surveillance aircraft hovering above.

Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s finance minister, has publicly called for “a large-scale operation across the [occupied] West Bank”, adding that “the time had come”.

Condition of injured Israeli soldier deteriorates

The Israeli army says on its radio channel that the condition of one of seven soldiers injured during the raid on Jenin in the occupied West Bank has deteriorated.

His condition is “dangerous but stable”, said Army Radio without mentioning his name.

Palestinian journalist wounded by Israeli fire

A Palestinian journalist reporting from Jenin has been wounded by Israeli fire during a military raid of the occupied West Bank city, the health ministry says.

Hazem Nasser, a cameraman for Al-Ghad TV channel, was surrounded by Israeli forces and said Israeli snipers were shooting at him while he hid behind an ambulance.

Nasser was transferred to Ibn Sina Hospital, journalists at the site reported.

According to the health ministry, Nasser’s injury “ranges between medium to dangerous”.

Egypt condemns Israeli raid on Jenin

Egypt has condemned the Israeli military raid on the occupied West Bank city of Jenin.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that “Egypt completely rejects this aggression, which contradicts all provisions of international law legitimacy,” reported Wafa News Agency.

Egypt also warned against a continued Israeli escalation against Palestinians.

’‘Such attacks only inflame the situation further and risk going out of control which undermines efforts to reduce tensions in the occupied territories,” added the statement.

Hamas declares support for resistance in Jenin

Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem has stressed that “the Palestinian resistance in the occupied West Bank remains solid and strong”.

“The Israeli occupation is far from winning the battle against the resistance in Jenin,” he said in a press statement by the group ruling the Gaza Strip since 2007.

“Jenin proves today once again that it is invincible and present in the resistance, and that the Israeli occupation is still surprised every time it tries to end the resistance,” said Qassem.

Seven Israeli soldiers injured

Reporting from the occupied West Bank, Al Jazeera’s Walid al-Omary says seven Israeli soldiers from the border guard forces have been wounded and transferred to Rambam Hospital in Haifa by military helicopters.

Their condition was described as stable, according to Israeli media.

Al-Quds Brigades says it used explosives against Israeli forces

The Jenin Battalion of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s (PIJ) al-Quds Brigades says it used high-level explosives for the first time on Monday.

The Brigades said they fired these explosives at Israeli forces during the raid.
