FOLLOW VACCINATION RULES OR LOSE PAY, JOB: GOOGLE WARNS EMPLOYEES

Coronavirus (COVID-19) News Desk World

Wed 15 December 2021:

CNBC reported on Tuesday that Google has informed its employees that if they do not comply with the company’s COVID-19 vaccination policy, they will lose pay and eventually be fired.

Employees had until December 3 to disclose their vaccination status and upload proof of vaccination, or seek a medical or religious exemption, according to a memo sent by leadership.

Google and parent company Alphabet have been staunchly behind vaccines since the middle of the year.

Employees who had not uploaded their status or who had not been vaccinated, as well as those whose exemption requests had been denied, would be contacted after that date, according to the company.

Employees who do not follow the vaccination guidelines by the deadline of January 18 will be placed on “paid administrative leave” for 30 days, according to the memo.

The employee will then be placed on “unpaid personal leave” for up to six months before being terminated.

While much of the IT industry continues to postpone return-to-work plans and businesses large and small prepare for a more flexible future, Google has announced that beginning in the new year, its employees will be required to come into physical offices three days a week.

It’s also showing signs of exhaustion, with people refusing to take vaccinations that have been widely available for months.

“We’re committed to doing everything possible to help our employees who can be vaccinated do so,” Google told Reuters when approached about the CNBC article. “We firmly stand behind our vaccination policy.”

Concerns over the Omicron variant and staff reluctance to company-mandated vaccines prompted Google to postpone its return-to-work plans indefinitely earlier this month.
