Thu 23 May 2024:

Tanzanian authorities said on Wednesday that they are installing 6,500 cameras in key economic areas in four major cities to boost safety and security.

Minister of Home Affairs Hamad Masauni said the installation of cameras is part of implementing the “safer cities” project, which is set to begin in the 2024/2025 financial year.

Masauni announced the plans when he presented his ministry’s budget estimates for the 2024/2025 financial year in parliament in the national capital of Dodoma.

He said the cameras to be equipped with artificial intelligence technology will be installed in industrial areas, commercial areas, public gatherings, city streets, hotels, and places for social services in the cities of Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, and Mwanza.

“The project will help to stimulate economic and social activities due to the improved security in towns and cities across the country,” Masauni told the House.

The project will be implemented through a concessional loan worth 145.2 million U.S. dollars from the government of the United Arab Emirates, he said.
