Sat 22 January 2022:

Two Lyon residents have been charged with selling over 1,000 bogus COVID-19 health passes.

The duo is suspected of forging certificates by hacking into a French nurse’s account in Gironde last summer.

According to the Bordeaux public prosecutor’s office, they were arrested on Tuesday following “several months” of investigation.

A private practicing nurse noticed that their professional account dedicated to COVID-19 vaccinations had been hacked, prompting the investigation.

The hackers “generated more than a thousand false health passes in a few days”, police said in a statement.

They said that they had accessed the nurse’s records at a facility in Le Taillan-Médoc using “anonymous software.”

The cyberattack was connected to a couple on the outskirts of Lyon, where police reportedly recovered a firearm, €9,000, roughly 20 cellphones, and “a considerable number of digital material.”

Prosecutors said the male suspect was remanded in detention while his partner was freed under judicial monitoring.

Since the summer, police in France have discovered 182,000 bogus COVID passes, according to the interior ministry.

On Thursday, France’s Prime Minister stated that a new “vaccine pass” would be implemented on Monday.

To visit pubs, restaurants, and other cultural places, citizens must be completely vaccinated or have just recovered from infection.
