According to the Afghan Ministry of Higher Education, government universities would reopen for students soon.

The acting minister of higher education, Abdul Baqi Haqqani, said “the preparation and plans are being completed and soon the universities related to the Islamic Emirate will also be opened and the education will continue.”

All universities were closed when the Taliban took power over two months ago, but private universities have now reopened.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Higher Education and the Union of Private Universities signed an agreement to improve educational opportunities for students.

The agreement calls for scholarships offering tuition discounts from 20 percent to 60 percent for 60,000 students at universities in the capital and provinces.

“We will provide partial scholarships or discounted fees of 20 percent to 60 percent for qualified students. 60,000 students would be served by this, across fields of study, the head of the union, Ahmad Tariq Kamal, said.
