GRAIN SILOS AT BEIRUT PORT COLLAPSE AFTER WEEKS OF FIRE

Middle East World

Sun 31 July 2022:

Four days prior to the second anniversary of the devastating 2020 explosion in the Lebanese capital, grain silos at Beirut’s blast-damaged port partially collapsed on Sunday.

A fire that has been burning for weeks and sent huge clouds of smoke across the port caused the northern portion of the silos to collapse.

The road close to the port was closed to traffic after the collapse.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Lebanese MP Najat Aoun, who was at the port, said that no damage was caused by the collapse, citing civil defense teams working in the area.

Aoun, who is also a chemistry professor, added that there was nothing to threaten the health of the people of Beirut, as the dust quickly dissipated thanks to the wind.

Nasser Yassin, the environment minister, issued a warning on Friday, stating that 200,000 masks had been distributed to residents of the area to protect them from air pollution and that the grain silos at the port could collapse at any time.

On August 4, 2020, a huge explosion rocked the Port of Beirut, killing 200 people, injuring close to 6,000, and leaving a massive trail of devastation in its wake. 2,750 tons of dangerous nitrate ammonium that was improperly stored at the port were the reason behind the explosion.
