The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, has hailed the decision by the African Union to suspend Israel’s proposed observer status at the international organisation.

“The Israel question has been suspended for now,” explained a diplomat on the closing day of the AU’s annual summit in Addis Ababa. “Instead there will be a committee set up to study the issue.”

Hamas Spokesman Hazem Qasem called on the committee “to act in line with the AU’s values and principles based on rejecting occupation and racial discrimination.” He also called on its members to “endorse the Palestinian people’s struggle for their rights and self-determination.”

The positions taken and roles played by all AU member states who pushed back against granting observer status to the occupation state was also praised by the Islamic movement. “This reiterates that they act in line with this organisation’s genuine principles in their continuous support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinians.”

The decision to suspend the observer state process meant that the union avoided a potentially-damaging vote and unprecedented rift in the 55-member bloc.
