Tue 30 May 2023:
The WHO reported Tuesday, that more than 1,000 attacks on health-care systems in Ukraine have been registered since the beginning of the Russian invasion, more than in any prior humanitarian crisis.
According to the World Health Organization’s European region office, the attacks have had an impact on medical personnel, supplies, infrastructure, and transportation, including ambulances.
“The 1,004 WHO-verified attacks over the past 15 months of full-scale war have claimed at least 101 lives, including both health workers and patients, and injured many more,” the WHO said.
“Attacks on health care are a violation of international humanitarian law. They deprive people of the care they need and have wide-ranging, long-term consequences,” said the WHO representative in Ukraine Jarno Habicht.
A resolution passed last week at the WHO’s annual meeting in Geneva called for an immediate halt to all attacks by Moscow on hospitals in Ukraine.
According to the WHO, structural damage has left several areas, mainly in eastern Ukraine, with only partially functional health services.
While primary healthcare is usually available in conflict-affected areas, the WHO reported that health expenses have risen in the last half-year, with surveys indicating that about a third of the population is unable to afford certain health treatments.
