Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼

◼️ ‘A slap in the face for South Africans’: It’s these images of Zuma and Ajay together that have led to several questions directed at Ronald Lamola, Dirco Minister. On Wednesday, he finally responded. Lamola said while Zuma was entitled to certain privileges as a former head of state, this did not give him a right to run a parallel foreign policy. Lamola also confirmed an investigation into Sooklal’s presence during the visit to the Guptas. Dr Imraan Buccus, a senior research associate at Auwal Socio-Economic Research Institute, said it was concerning that a high commissioner representing South Africa could be seen facilitating Zuma’s trip to the Guptas in India.”

◼️ Say goodbye to spam calls: Consumers who wish to register a pre-emptive block can do so by completing the prescribed form found in the regulations, with the NCC required to publish guidance on its website to assist consumers. Direct marketers have been urged to ensure compliance, as those who do not comply with regulations could face massive administrative penalties. These penalties can reach up to R1,000,000 or 10% of the direct marketers’ annual turnover, whichever is greater.

◼️ Prepaid electricity meter users hit with fines up to R75,000: “When residents report power problems, technicians often arrive without spare parts and bypass the meters to temporarily restore power,” it said. “Shortly afterwards, inspectors visit the same residents’ properties and accuse them of having tampered with the meters.” It said there were several reports of individuals subsequently telling residents that they would make the relevant fine disappear in exchange for a cash payment.

◼️ Nigeria seeks compensation for citizens’ losses: In an interview with the SABC on Thursday evening, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said some Nigerians suffered losses due to the anti-illegal immigration protests in South Africa. Due to this, the Nigerian government plans to engage South Africa to seek compensation for its citizens affected by the protests. Dirco spokesperson Chrispin Phiri said the South African government would address the issues in an “orderly manner”.

◼️ South African employers face scrutiny: The Simunye Workers Forum (SWF) says it has documented several cases across Gauteng in recent weeks in which migrant workers have allegedly been dismissed, retrenched, or prevented from returning to work following the protests. “It has become clear to us over the past few weeks that employers are seizing upon the current mobilisations to carry out unfair dismissals and unlawful pseudo-retrenchments,” the organisation said. “If an employer has employed someone for years despite knowing, or having reason to know, of their immigration status, they cannot simply rely on that status to avoid following fair dismissal procedures when public pressure mounts.”
