Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼

◼️ Ramaphosa to dispatch diplomatic envoys across Africa as migration issues mount: Ramaphosa said South Africa is already consulting governments across Africa on migration management. He said the country wants to understand how other countries had dealt with border pressures. He did not specify when the envoys will be deployed or which countries will be prioritised. “Yes, there will be envoys. Yes, there will be people that we will send out, not only on the continent but also around the world,” Ramaphosa said.

◼️More than 700 Nelson Mandela Bay residents housed overnight: As wet conditions continue along the coastal areas, residents in the Eastern and Western Cape have had to take precautions to protect themselves from severe weather that disrupts daily life. This comes after more than 21 wards across the Metro have been affected by flooding, waterlogging, and stormwater-related incidents, as well as infrastructure damage from severe weather.

It is spreading at a rate, perhaps as fast as HIV/Aids used to spread.” The minister told the MPs that after the department suffered a decade of austerity, Godongwana had allocated R6.7 billion.

◼️ People are breaking public CCTV cameras in SA: “When public assets such as CCTV cameras are vandalised or stolen, it not only undermines our efforts to create safer environments for residents but also diverts valuable resources.” According to a presentation shared by e-Government, a total of 269 individual CCTV cameras were offline across the province by the beginning of April 2026. While it did not reveal how many individual cameras were offline due to vandalism, it did indicate that 36 CCTV sites had been vandalised.

◼️ Social unrest warning for SA: Thousands have taken to the streets, and foreigners who are seen as competitors for scarce jobs, housing and government services have been attacked. The protests place South Africa in a widening global backlash against migration. In Germany, the far-right AfD party has capitalised on voter anxiety over asylum and integration. US President Donald Trump has made mass deportations a central pillar of his second term. And in the UK, immigration has become one of the country’s most combustible political issues.
