Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼

◼️ ‘We are going to pay the price’: “Those foreign nationals who left the country, whether here legally or illegally, likely contributed more to the economy than they took from it, so it is effectively a loss for us. We will never know the true impact on the economy, but we are going to pay a price for this for a long time, especially in an economy struggling to grow,” he said. Meanwhile, Spar Group South Africa spokesperson Mpudi Maubane denied rumours that the company has employed locals to replace foreign nationals. Maubane said Spar did not advertise 15 000 jobs, and no such recruitment initiative exists.

◼️ Disciplinary action looming for healthcare professionals: The regulators said they had determined that the products pose a significant safety risk, adding that any practitioner who continues prescribing or dispensing them would be knowingly placing patients at risk. “SAHPRA will continue to take decisive regulatory and enforcement action against any entity that contravenes the Medicines and Related Substances Act,” she said, warning that the unlawful manufacture, importation, advertising and distribution of unregistered medicines “pose a serious risk to public health.”

◼️ ‘Fallen to ruin’: The South African High Commission in London “closed without notice” this week because its building, the iconic South Africa House on Trafalgar Square, has “fallen into ruin”– according to the Democratic Alliance (DA). Dirco denied this, saying “South Africa House is not being abandoned, nor has the building been closed because of neglect.” It said the staff were being temporarily relocated to replace the building’s heating system, which had reached the end of its operational life.

◼️ Problem for South Africans who crash their electric and hybrid cars: South Africa has a shortage of technicians trained to work on automotive high-voltage (HV) systems, causing delays in repairs of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid cars. The panel beater said they had experienced similar issues with other vehicle manufacturers selling EVs in South Africa, including BYD. Electric and hybrid cars feature far more complex electrical systems, with HV connections operating at voltages well over the 50V considered hazardous to humans.
