◼️ US doubles down on Afrikaner persecution claim: And while claims that Afrikaners are under attack in SA have been debunked time and again, Donald Trump’s administration continues to cling to the narrative, portraying the minority group as victims of persecution and racial discrimination. “President Trump has been very clear that we are prioritising the resettlement of Afrikaners in South Africa who are escaping government-sponsored race-based discrimination, a US policy indicated in EO 14204,” it told IOL.

◼️ 88% of South Africans took money instead of land: Oppenheimer explained that to assess the land issue, one must distinguish between land restitution and land reform. “People wanted cash because it allows them to buy a house in the city, pay for their child’s education, or invest in a business,” he said. “Land itself isn’t necessarily what everybody wants. What people want is capital and opportunity.” He added that land reform has been a failure. “The outcomes of these projects have not been very good,” he said.

◼️ Petition against Eskom’s 8.83% tariff hike passes 5 700 signatures: The document highlighted the scale of tariff increases over time, noting that electricity prices had risen 937% between 2007 and 2024, while inflation rose only 155% over the same period. It also referenced Eskom’s recent financial results, noting the utility’s second consecutive profitable year, with a net profit of R30.3 billion for the year ended March 2026. The petition further argued that South African consumers, whether unemployed, grant-dependent or servicing high levels of household debt, were poorly placed to absorb another increase, citing unemployment, poverty and municipal debt figures from Stats SA, the South African Reserve Bank and DebtBusters.

◼️ 150 years in prison for Facebook Marketplace robbers: “The group allegedly operated as an organised criminal syndicate, with its members performing different roles, including advertising items for sale, and communicating with potential victims.” Members of the group would use Facebook Marketplace scams to arrange meetings with victims, directing them to predetermined locations, where they would descend on them. “The suspects advertised items such as ice-cream machines, DJ sound systems and vehicles on Facebook Marketplace at attractive prices,” the announcement indicated.

◼️ Legal warning for parents with children in private schools: Parents who fail to pay their child’s private school fees could face legal action, and in some cases, the school may terminate the learner’s enrolment. Depending on whether a student attends public or private school in South Africa, unpaid fees could have very different consequences. The issue is often misunderstood by both parents and schools. Some parents believe a learner can never be excluded for unpaid fees.
