◼️ One sector lost R100 million due to the national shutdown: South Africa’s road freight and logistics sector reportedly lost as much as R100 million as a result of the national shutdown which took place on 30 June 2026. This according to the Road Freight Association (RFA) CEO Gavin Kelly, who posited this figure in a recent media statement discussing the impact of the protest on the sector. This figure reportedly included all cost estimations for extra security, extra shifts, extended warehousing, trip delays, and paid days for employees told to stay home.

◼️ Malatsi denies Starlink lobbying claims: Malatsi’s letter comes after the ANC called for a full investigation into alleged DA corruption and what it described as “perturbing, damning” allegations made by former DA leader John Steenhuisen recently. Steenhuisen alleged that Resolve Communications used its proximity to DA leaders to arrange meetings between DA ministers in the GNU and Leon’s clients, among them Elon Musk’s Starlink.

◼️ Hundreds stranded as Western Cape closes Epping repatriation centre:  However, hundreds of foreign nationals remained camped outside the Epping repatriation centre wanting to leave for their home countries. Humanitarian organisations continue to assist those left out in the cold. The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) said, “the Commission is also dismayed by reports of some embassies and consulates that have invited their nationals to present themselves for repatriation but have failed to allocate sufficient human and financial resources to ensure that this process proceeds smoothly and with dignity.”

◼️ Six dangers of a digital ID system in SA: “The South African government, through the Department of Home Affairs, would log your activities, your use of your digital ID for at least seven years.” He said this would create a long-term record of citizens’ activities and interactions, giving the government significant power and knowledge over citizens’ movements. His final cause for concern was that the government had made it clear that it had a very high regard for some of the world’s most authoritarian and totalitarian regimes.

◼️ New tax in the works for all car owners: However, the announcement has been heavily criticised by motorists, industry stakeholders, and political parties. The Democratic Alliance slammed the proposal, stating that motorists are already burdened by excessive taxes, high fuel prices, and the rising cost of living. It also argued that motorists should not be forced to pay even more for the RAF, an entity that has been severely mismanaged and is hundreds of billions of rands in debt despite receiving R45 billion per year from the RAF Levy.
