◼️OTT prices in line of fire: The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has put over-the-top (OTT) service providers — including multinationals Netflix and WhatsApp, and the country’s telecommunications giants — on notice over the pricing of their services. “As the country is largely categorised by high levels of unevenness and complexity in terms of price of data … [this] creates a situation where citizens pay excessive data costs compared to both global and continent standards. Consequently, there is a need for policy interventions in this regard,” the request for proposal issued by the department of communications & digital technologies reads.

◼️ Eskom spent R233.4bn on a power station still unfinished after 18 years: In 2008, Eskom began building Kusile Power Station, which was scheduled for completion by 2017 at a cost of R121 billion. 18 years and R233.4 billion later, the utility now expects Kusile to be completed in the 2028 financial year. Eskom had failed to invest in expanding its generation capacity since the 1980s, despite the government’s own forecasts that demand would exceed supply in 2008.

◼️ New cannabis laws in SA: However, Paul-Michael Keichel, Specialist Cannabis and Environmental Lawyer cautioned that the current situation should not be interpreted as a complete free-for-all. There are, however, several issues that still need to be clarified before the regulations are finalised. Keichel also highlighted uncertainty around cannabis products such as extracts, oils, vapes and edibles. Previous draft regulations did not adequately address these products, which could create difficulties for law enforcement.

◼️ ‘Police killings threaten South Africa’s stability,’: President Ramaphosa warned that attacks on police officers are not just assaults on individuals but on the “integrity of the State, the rule of law and the constitutional order.” Acknowledging scrutiny of the Saps following the Judicial Commission of Inquiry, Ramaphosa said, “At this moment, the Saps is operating under unprecedented public scrutiny. The revelations emerging from the Judicial Commission of Inquiry have raised legitimate questions about policing, leadership, accountability and institutional integrity. This must not result in paralysis. Instead, it must be a catalyst for renewal.

We trusted you’: Linda Govender, the mother of missing South African pilgrim Terricia Govender says she is searching villages and riverbanks in Nepal while appealing to Sadhguru and the Isha Foundation for urgent support. In a Facebook appeal this morning, Govender said: “While you continue with your public appearances, your promotions and your normal activities, I am here in Nepal searching for my daughter, Terricia.” “People trusted you. All 77 families are devastated . They trusted the Isha Foundation. They travelled believing they were in the hands of an organisation they could trust.
