◼️ Malema expected to face criminal prosecution: Pieterse filed a complaint after Malema publicly called the former Bergview College principal a “rapist” at the party’s event in Johannesburg in April 2025 and maintained that he had raped the seven-year-old pupil. But the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) later declined to prosecute anyone, saying there was no concrete evidence of rape or sexual assault after the child was interviewed and examined by medical practitioners.

◼️SA has the highest criminality in Southern Africa: The biggest problem for South Africa is that the situation is worsening across most criminal sectors. The country saw a big increase in extortion and protection rackets, and heroin, cocaine, and synthetic drug trading. There was also a big increase in cyber-dependent crimes. The report also revealed that South Africa has a serious problem with mafia-style groups, criminal networks, and state-embedded actors.

◼️ Operation Ubuntu’s fight against xenophobia: Organisers said the day of action was to hold the state accountable for its actions, including its role in encouraging vigilante groups. “We are united in demanding an end to the crisis of xenophobia and to the broader conditions of deprivation affecting migrants and South African citizens alike. The lack of housing, the lack of jobs, and the lack of access to essential services such as healthcare and education are failures of government delivery, not the fault of migrant communities,” the memorandum stated.

◼️ Sasol raided: A long-running criminal investigation into allegations that Sasol unlawfully polluted the Vaal River system took a dramatic new turn this week when National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) investigators executed fresh search warrants at the company’s Secunda operations while executives were appearing before parliament. In March 2021, the Mail & Guardian reported that Erasmus, who worked at Sasol from 2005 until 2020, alleges he was forced to resign after raising concerns internally and externally about environmental non-compliance.

◼️ The man who started his own business at 7 years old: Shameel Joosub was born and raised in Laudium, southwest of Pretoria. He started his entrepreneurial venture at the age of five, when he began selling samoosas and earrings to people living in his neighbourhood. “I would buy these products for 10c and sell them for 20c,” Joosub told MyBroadband.
