Mon 11 May 2026:
Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ MK Party submits motion of no confidence against Ramaphosa: He said the Constitutional Court’s ruling that the prima facie evidence relating to the robbery on Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm in 2020 warrants a full investigation. He said this casts a “very dark” cloud over the President. The Constitutional court has set aside a 2022 parliamentary decision to block parliament from further probing allegations of money laundering that Ramaphosa faces after $580,000 was stolen on his game farm.

Funding will be directed towards infrastructure repairs and recovery efforts, although access to the funds remains subject to strict processes.

◼️ Rhodes University dismisses false hantavirus outbreak claims: The institution dismissed a poster circulating on social media. It further urged students, staff, and the wider community not to panic or spread unverified claims as concern grows globally over recent hantavirus cases. “We wish to categorically state that this information is completely false,” the university said.

◼️ Eskom pays its employees R5.4 billion in bonuses as electricity prices surge: “While South Africans buckle under double-digit electricity increases and rising inflation, Eskom has rewarded its staff with over R5.4 billion in performance incentives,” DA spokesperson on electricity and energy Kevin Mileham said. Yelland noted that Eskom employees, on average, are paid extremely well relative to other South Africans, making the issue of bonuses even more severe. MyBroadband calculated that the minimum monthly salary of a unionised employee at Eskom is R19,768.

◼️ Hacker group targeted companies in SA using fake SARS notifications: In one example of a phishing email attempt collected by SARS on 10 February 2026, the sender accused the recipient of failing to pay their outstanding tax debt for one or more years. Attached to the email is a fake court summons with a button labelled “view legal document & case details here”, which downloads a 62.3KB file. “Social engineering played a key role in this campaign,” said Anton Kargin.
