◼️ Ramaphosa calls for accountability over Palestine, Sudan, Iran: His statement forms part of a broader push by South Africa to position itself as a leading voice for the Global South by demanding consistency in global governance and the international rules-based system. Ramaphosa said it was important to “exert pressure and expose violations whenever and by whomever they are committed”. Ramaphosa said that, as Brics members, they must ensure that the “voices of Africa and the Global South are fully reflected in shaping the future international order.”

◼️ Cape Town’s extortion gangs prey on foreign-owned spaza shops: “The foreigners are the easier targets because they are scared, more scared than South Africans,” said Fransina Lukas, head of the community policing forum for the Western Cape province that includes Cape Town. Extortion gangs typically issue letters demanding monthly payments for “protection” services, Lukas told AFP. “If the person refuses, they send the runners to rob the business; they harass the clients until it gets to the real brutal part where they go and actually kill people,” she said.

◼️ Medical aid warning to new parents in SA: A newborn could need treatment for conditions such as jaundice, feeding difficulties or breathing problems, or require investigations, specialist consultations or neonatal care. He urged parents to enquire with their medical schemes before the birth to understand exactly how their policy works and what would happen if their newborn requires urgent medical treatment after delivery. “When parents understand what their medical scheme covers and what they need to do to register their newborn, they can approach those first few weeks with greater confidence,” said Callakoppen.

◼️ 122,000 smart meters blocked: As community members receive smart meters in their homes, Eskom gains greater control over their electricity supply and usage and can detect the installation of illegal connections. “Despite ongoing stakeholder engagement, including work with ward councillors, public meetings and media platforms, resistance in some areas continues to affect progress,” said Ramokgopa. “These include safety incidents, intimidation, and work stoppages, resulting in delays, with over 122,000 planned installations impacted to date.”

◼️ Chinese cars reshape used market: WesBank, one of South Africa’s largest vehicle financiers, says the entry
of competitively priced Chinese cars has caused a structural change in the country’s secondhand car market, with prices in that segment of the market coming under significant pressure. “The prices of vehicles in South Africa have come down structurally due to increased competition. For example, if a consumer buys a car, in five years’ time one would be able to estimate how much they would resell it for. The dynamics in the resale market have changed a lot,” Vilakazi said.
