Here’s what’s happening in *South Africa today:* 👇🏼

◼️ R500,000 of taxpayer money used to send the Finance Minister’s wife to Davos and Paris: This question comes after several high-profile incidents involving ministers having their partners accompany them on trips outside of South Africa for state business. The most high-profile case involved Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson, whose partner accompanied him on a trip to Brazil. Macpherson said the accompaniment of his partner cost the state R350,000.

◼️ The mafia thriving in SA: Many municipalities in South Africa, including major metros, have come under siege from water-tanker mafias—organised crime groups that intentionally disrupt public water systems to create water shortages. By instigating these crises, they force municipalities and communities to depend on their water trucks, which then sell water at greatly inflated prices, establishing a lucrative extortion-based business model.

◼️ SA schools up in smoke by vaping crisis: The study published in the South African Medical Journal (SAMJ), which surveyed 52 schools across eight provinces, found that 16.8% of students, nearly one in six, are current vapers. 36.7% of students reported having ever tried a vaping product. Many young users turn to vapes to cope with stress, anxiety, and depression, while others use them to improve their body image, control their weight, or help them sleep.

◼️ Bad news about Shein and Temu prices: It will require importers to obtain a Certificate of Conformity confirming that a product meets South African National Standards for safety and quality to pass through customs. Examples include electrical components like cables or appliances that may cause fires, poor-quality furniture that may fail prematurely, and cosmetics and skincare products with harmful chemicals. China has been chosen as the first focus country in the programme’s pilot phase, as it is South Africa’s largest source of imported goods.

◼️ South African plastic surgeon warns against dangerous expectations: In recent months, Sofianos says more patients are arriving with AI-generated images of themselves, often showing dramatic changes to noses, jawlines or breasts. The problem is that some of these edits go beyond what is surgically possible or safe. That disconnect matters. Cosmetic procedures, even the more subtle ones, are still medical interventions that depend on anatomy, healing and a surgeon’s judgement. They are not copy-and-paste transformations.
