Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:👇🏼

◼️ SA draws line on summit ‘summoning’ culture: President Cyril Ramaphosa will not attend the Africa Forward Summit hosted by France in Kenya. Diplomats said that there is growing discontent over how individual European nations can call on African leaders at short notice. This also comes after South Africa was uninvited from the G7 conference in June.

◼️ Good news for South Africans who still use green ID books: South Africans who get a smart ID card through Home Affairs’ new bank branch-based digital partnership programme do not have to hand in their green ID books when receiving their card. Many people who obtained their smart ID cards at a conventional Home Affairs office reported having to surrender their green ID book.

◼️ Calls to change schools in SA: Millions of young South Africans have matriculated from the school system, but many lack the necessary skills to enter the job market. Soft skills, which include critical thinking, communication, and collaboration, are also underrepresented in the job market. Van Heerden is calling for an evolution and an alternative to traditional schooling that prepares learners for the real world with the practical, vital skills demanded by the current job market.

◼️ Freedom Day reflection: Research conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in 2023, revealed that deep discontent with democratic and leadership performance and harsh views of core political institutions, are significant factors that keep voters away. “Our political parties are not serving the public’s interests. Our issues are infrastructure development, quality education, job creation, and improved overall service delivery. Samuel Madire, a resident of Tshwane said the never-ending, unfulfilled promises by politicians to the voters appear as if they (politicians) do not know what they are doing.
