Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼

◼️ IEC reassures public that local elections won’t disrupt school exams: “Around that time, it would be the beginning of exams, and not a lot of our learners would be writing exams. We wanted to hold the elections before the exams are in full swing, which is why the first week of November is important, and also because the elections are only for one day. We vote and then leave the space of young people so they can enjoy writing without any disruptions,” said Bapela.

◼️ Warning about gambling regulations: The growth of online gambling has intensified public concern about addiction, social harm and consumer protection. In South Africa, the betting industry generated about R1.5-trillion in turnover in financial 2025 — about R400bn more than the previous period — as many consumers sought alternative sources of income to cope with the high cost of living.

◼️ Double blow for food prices in SA: This includes unpredictable rainfall patterns, droughts, and other extreme weather events, which usually last between nine and twelve months. “We are facing higher input costs because of the war in the Middle East,” Sihlobo said. “Fertiliser prices are reasonably high, fuel prices are also at higher levels, and that’s about 50% of the input cost in the grain industry.”

◼️ More name changes coming to cities and towns in SA: He added that, while there is no set target for name changes, some in South African society do not embrace transformation, making it a “never-ending process”. “The reason would be, among other things, there are quite a number of sections of the society that are simply anti-transformation,” he said. ◼️Is public Wi-Fi safe? Once almost impossible to come by, it’s now (often freely) available in restaurants, malls, gyms, shops, airports, on campus and even on some flights. The bad news: connecting to public Wi-Fi could put your device at risk. But with a bit of caution on your part, you can lower your chances of getting compromised. How safe the network is often comes down to how it’s set up – and how you use it.
