Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼
◼️ New R2 and R5 coins launching in SA: The R5 coin will be an education tribute coin, featuring the designs of the R2 coins on its reverse side. As with other commemorative coins, they carry no higher value than their face values, but serve to celebrate certain milestones, important events and legacies. Some notable coins in the past include the 1994 Inauguration R5, which features the South African flag and a handshake.

◼️ SA’s anti‑migrant campaigns use the language of democracy: why that’s dangerous : Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the killing of migrants is a reminder of where othering can lead when it becomes normal to decide who belongs and who does not. Once this logic takes hold, it rarely stays limited to one group. In moments of crisis, it can expand to other vulnerable people. This was seen during the country’s May 2008 xenophobic violence in which 21 out of the 62 people killed were South African.

◼️ Malema under siege: EFF leader Julius Malema faces numerous challenges, including a potential jail sentence and accusations of getting financial support from controversial figures. Malema has faced numerous legal and ethical challenges throughout his career, which include being expelled from the ANC. Data presented to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry included explosive allegations against Malema and a cigarette businessman. The revelations, which came to light following the extraction of encrypted data from seized devices, centre on a web of leaked WhatsApp messages.

◼️ SA’s breast cancer care system is failing too many women: At the centre of the crisis is late diagnosis. The study found that around 67% of patients present with advanced-stage disease, a figure that significantly reduces survival chances and limits treatment options. “Two-thirds of patients are arriving with advanced breast cancer, and by that stage, outcomes are already much poorer. This is not just a clinical issue – it reflects systemic barriers to early diagnosis and access to care,” said Dr Milligan.

◼️ Smarter cars are making drivers dumber in SA: “For younger drivers, GPS navigation has virtually eliminated the stress and distraction of getting lost, allowing them to focus more on the road ahead.” However, Britz explained the insurer had observed a rise in digital over-reliance in driving. “Drivers trust automated systems so implicitly that their own situational awareness drops,” Britz said. “If a driver assumes their car will automatically brake for a hazard, their reaction time may be significantly delayed if the system fails to engage.”
