Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼

◼️ Ramaphosa says Chinese will build electric car charging networks in SA: Ramaphosa acknowledged that EVs were the future and that many companies worldwide were now switching to electric vehicles. The president said the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition was finalising a comprehensive EV programme so that “manufacturers can come to the fore.” “I’ve been to some of them in China, for instance, and they want to speed up their own production processes for EVs,” he said.

◼️ Why your R10 no longer stretches the same: Many households do not experience price increases through economic models or broad statistical baskets, but through the same handful of products bought week after week suddenly costing significantly more than a few years ago. If a consumer had R10 in 2021, that same amount would buy considerably less by March 2026 due to the cumulative effect of inflation over several years.

◼️ Rand Water and Eskom’s winter maintenance in Gauteng: She said the work is scheduled to take place between May and July 2026. “During this period, Rand Water will need to switch off some of its pumps and this will result in water supply interruptions.” She said Eskom and Rand Water had coordinated the planning of the work and strategically scheduled it for the winter season, which is traditionally a low water-demand period. Maroo said Rand Water would also use the opportunity to carry out its own planned maintenance work.

◼️ SA sets Guinness World Record: The record attempt took place from Friday, May 1, at 5:00 PM to Saturday, May 2, at 5:00 PM, during which GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS officials verified each donation and independently observed the process before confirming the final total. “This record gave us an opportunity to shine a light on the extraordinary dedication of the people who run our animal rescues,” said Montego Pet Nutrition Managing Director Johan van Jaarsveld.

◼️ More road tolls on the cards for SA motorists: Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has suggested that long-term road maintenance costs may be funded through more widespread tolling. This was mentioned during the Transport Department’s R102 billion budget vote tabling earlier this week. During the budget tabling, Minister Creecy also noted that her department is currently reviewing the Road Accident Fund’s funding structures.
