◼️ South Africa heading for July Riots 2.0: Now, Bureau for Economic Research’s Natasha Marrian said ANC insiders are concerned that “the growing proximity between elements of the anti-immigrant movement and former president Jacob Zuma’s MK Party could increase the risk of unrest, similar to that witnessed in July 2021”. She said this is a particular risk in the run-up to the 4 November local government election, and, concerningly, South Africa may not be prepared to weather such a storm.

◼️ Voting stations open across SA: More than 23 700 registration stations were expected to open their doors across South Africa, giving eligible citizens an opportunity to register to vote, verify their details or update their addresses ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections. The Commission has used Youth Month to intensify its appeal to first-time voters, particularly those aged between 18 and 19, among whom registration levels remain low. According to the IEC, more than 70% of South Africans in this age group are still not registered to vote.

◼️South Africa is not a Third World country: President Cyril Ramaphosa used the launch of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) Museum to hit back at some in the West who characterise South Africa as a Third World country. He even referenced US President Donald Trump previously labelling South Africa as a “s**thole”.

◼️Only 44% of police stations in SA answer the phone: According to the report, the DA used Google’s artificial intelligence-based research tool NotebookLM to analyse the collected data. The audit found that 56% of the stations could not be reached, while only 44% answered their phones. Many of the calls were dropped, engaged or simply just rang, the DA said. When stations did answer, they generally did so within 10 seconds. Only Gauteng and the Western Cape achieved a reachability greater than 50%.

◼️ South Africans sacrificing essentials, borrowing money to fund online gambling: The study found that 57% of participants had sacrificed essential expenses such as groceries, airtime, transport money, rent or debt repayments in order to fund their gambling activities. In addition, 29% said they had borrowed money to continue gambling, while 59% admitted to chasing losses by placing another bet on the same day after losing.
