Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:👇🏼
◼️ Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi scoops Newsmaker of the Year award: He warned that South Africa was approaching a dangerous point where institutions could become more fearful of the truth than of criminality. “When institutions begin to fear the truth more than they fear criminality, society enters dangerous territory. South Africa is standing at such a crossroads,” he said. Mkhwanazi argued that corruption, poor governance and organised crime continued to undermine communities, businesses and confidence in public institutions.

◼️ New tax proposed for vehicle licence renewals: As EV adoption increased, fuel sales and funding available to the RAF from the levy were expected to decline. Transport minister’s proposal was for a transitional levy to ensure the RAF remained afloat as EV adoption grew. The RAF helps fund the losses in income that people suffer due to road accidents. However, the entity has been severely criticised over corruption and maladministration, leading to significant wastage of its revenue.
