◼️ New protocol for former presidents: The government is taking steps to avoid a repetition of its recent embarrassment when South Africa’s High Commissioner to India, Anil Sooklal, was photographed at an event in India with former president Jacob Zuma and State Capture-linked Ajay Gupta. On Wednesday, 5 August 2026, Lamola announced at a press conference in Pretoria that Sooklal had been “recalled to the headquarters for further consultations”

◼️ Phala Phala burglary trial: Judgment to be handed down in November: It’s alleged that in February 2020 they broke into President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm and stole $580,000 in cash. The court heard how accused number one, David, allegedly splurged the money on a fleet of luxury cars, a diamond-encrusted Rolex watch, property and expensive gifts for his girlfriend.

◼️ eNCA plans major restructuring as 171 people face retrenchment: eNCA said the proposed changes are aimed at creating “a smaller, focused, multi-platform newsroom” that is better suited to modern news consumption patterns. The company argued that the current staffing model does not adequately support a multi-platform environment and contributes to duplication in content production.

◼️ 397 SA schools suffered prolonged or complete electricity outages: Gwarube responded, saying between 1 April 2024 and 31 March 2026, 397 public schools experienced prolonged or complete electricity outages. By far the worst province was the Eastern Cape, where 324 schools were hit by prolonged or complete electricity outages.

◼️ Bad news about unemployment and poverty in SA: High unemployment and rising absolute poverty create conditions for desperation and the desire for radical change that can destabilise the country. Coleman said that while South Africa appears to have hit rock bottom and is turning the corner, it is not happening fast enough to address these issues
