Thu 21 May 2026:
Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:👇🏼
◼️ SA’s security under threat: This, they said, has led to a decline in South Africa’s defence capability with ageing and inadequate equipment, a lack of infrastructure maintenance, and inadequate provisioning for military personnel at a time when the role of the SANDF has been expanded to assist in border control, disaster relief and crime fighting. This lack of funding compromises national security, they said.

◼️ Eskom in early talks with World Bank, others on nuclear funding: Cash-strapped Eskom cannot fund new nuclear plants on its own and is seeking backing from partners including commercial banks and institutions such as the African Development Bank, Nxumalo said. “As a matter of policy, we do not comment on potential or exploratory discussions with member countries or utilities,” a World Bank spokesperson said.

◼️ Warning for unmarried couples living together in SA: There is no automatic right to claim ownership of a property even if you contributed to its purchase and maintenance. You also do not have an automatic right to seek financial support from your partner if the relationship ends. Additionally, you won’t qualify for tax benefits that are available to married couples. For example, money or assets transferred between spouses are exempt from donations tax.

◼️ Diakonia chaos: The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal has called for an urgent multi-sector response to address rising tensions over illegal immigration in Durban, following chaotic scenes outside Diakonia. ANC provincial spokesperson Sifiso Sonjica said the situation reflects growing complexity around illegal immigration and requires a coordinated response involving government institutions, the private sector, non-governmental organisations, human rights advocates, traditional leaders, and religious communities.

◼️ Cash for e-waste in SA: The Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment has announced the launch of its E-Waste Pilot Project, through which it will pay South Africans R4.50 per kilogram of electronic waste. It said the launch event was scheduled for Wednesday, 20 May 2026, at the Rotary Stadium in Ngangelizwe, Mthatha. “A recent study revealed that about 60% of Gen Zs and millennials do not know what e-waste is, and 50% do not know the threat posed by e-waste to the environment and human health,” he said.
