Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ Ramaphosa faces tough choice: The clock is ticking for President Cyril Ramaphosa as he weighs the fate of National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola. With Masemola now embroiled in a criminal case tied to a scandal tearing through the South African Police Service (SAPS), the President’s next move is under intense scrutiny.

◼️ Eskom gives the all-clear for winter: Power utility Eskom says that South Africa is entering the winter months with a stable power system, with no hint of load shedding or national interruptions on the cards. Presenting its winter 2026 outlook, the power utility said its Generation Recovery Plan—implemented to combat load shedding over the past few years—is now firmly embedded in its day-to-day operations.

◼️ Afrikaner refugee families to return to SA: A group of Afrikaner refugees hoping to return to South Africa has sparked backlash from Americans. This comes after the authorities revealed that almost 5 000 South Africans – predominantly white Afrikaners – have taken up resettlement in the US to date. The programme was commissioned by President Donald Trump via executive order in February 2025 to aid victims of “racial injustice”.

◼️ South Africa’s shocking maths reality: The government celebrated the 88% matric pass rate in 2025, but it did not say that only 5% of children who start grade 1 achieved 50% in mathematics at matric. Mathematics, often dubbed the universal language, is a core pillar of global education and one of the few subjects that requires deductive reasoning. Universities have urged schools to encourage learners to take mathematics in matric. Without it, many careers are closed to them.

◼️ SAA bailout looms: SAA may soon require another taxpayer-funded bailout, with a source close to the airline telling The Citizen that funding could be made available as early as May. Earlier this month, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy denied SAA had been given R1 billion last year in the form of the sale of shares of the airline to the shareholder.
