◼️ DIRCO dismisses Ghanian nationals’ ‘opportunistic’ petition to ICC: The Department of International Relations and Cooperation has dismissed two Ghanaian nationals’ petition to the International Criminal Court as opportunistic. They have asked the court to open a preliminary investigation into attacks against foreign nationals in South Africa, as they believe that could constitute crimes against humanity. More than 160,000 foreign nationals left South Africa over the past two months as local groups increased violent hostility against undocumented migrants, according to an AFP tally based on figures from the repatriating governments.

◼️ Solar panels could save SA municipalities R10 billion a year: While solar tariffs were roughly equivalent to Eskom’s in 2020, the gap has widened since then. It is estimated that by 2030, solar-generated electricity will cost less than a third of Eskom’s. PARI’s report comes at a time when Eskom and municipalities are looking to crack down further on private solar installations in South Africa. Eskom has set a requirement for all solar users to register their systems with the power utility, and has offered to waive registration fees until 30 September 2026.

◼️ The disconnect: “We have a crisis of opposition parties in South Africa; there are many of them, but they are irrelevant and are the mini-me of the ANC and the DA; mini-me policies, and mini-me leaders. They don’t address the issues that ordinary people are struggling with,” Professor William Gumede, a governance expert from Wits University, said. He warned that politics in South Africa is the easiest way to make money. “Right now we have companies in politics. They are not interested in fighting for the ordinary citizens; they are fighting for their pockets. This is why you see people passing on the parties to their family members; to the children, as if it is the company.

◼️ SA’s dirty R721 billion secret: The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) has reported that the national economic burden of air pollution is already substantial, estimating an annual cost of health impacts at R721 billion, which accounts for around 14% of the country’s GDP. “The cost to the South African economy comes to an estimated R721 billion (USD 38 billion). This includes lost working days and overwhelming pressure on the public healthcare system,” said CREA.

◼️ Fake sick notes cost South Africa R18 billion every year: “If you go to see a doctor when you’re not really sick, and that doctor wants to earn his fee, they will give you the sick note. “Unfortunately, an employer can do nothing about that. It’s genuine and comes from the doctor.” He said the country was also experiencing a situation where bogus doctors issue illegal sick notes without examining patients, simply because there are not enough doctors.
