◼️ Ramaphosa’s private Zimbabwe farm visit sparks questions over true purpose: Some speculated that Ramaphosa was on a mission to strike private business deals with members of the Zimbabwean business sector, given that he flew in the same helicopter as people described by the Zimbabwean media as “tender magnates” in that country. Others wondered whether Ramaphosa might have been pursuing Thabo Mbeki-style “silent diplomacy” to cut a deal that would secure Mnangagwa’s political future.

◼️ Kenya and Nigeria issue advisories: In an advisory note, the High Commission said: “Kenyan nationals are urged to avoid, as far as possible, areas where protests or demonstrations may be taking place, and to remain attentive to guidance issued by local authorities. They are further encouraged to carry valid identification and relevant documentation at all times.” South Africa’s acting police minister, Firoz Cachalia, condemned anti-immigrant violence last week, saying: “Acts of xenophobia, violence, looting or intimidation will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”

◼️ New threat to schools in SA: Results from a recent Schools Water Testing Project by environmental NGO WaterCAN found that nearly a third of participating schools had high levels of E. coli in their drinking water. Escherichia coli (E.coli) is a bacterium usually found in the gut of humans. While most strains are harmless, they can also indicate the presence of dangerous pathogens.

◼️ SAPS orders Fadiel Adams to hand himself over: The South African Police Service has called on Fadiel Adams to hand himself over to the nearest police station in connection with fraud and defeating the ends of justice. Police confirm they’re in possession of a warrant of arrest for him. Adams is alleged to have interfered with investigations into the murder of former ANC Youth League leader Sindiso Magaqa.

◼️ Digital ID Book for SA — here are the proposed new rules: In the future, the MyMzansi platform is expected to allow South Africans to apply for student bursaries, renew vehicle licences, and use all other existing online services through a single platform. The process will include facial biometric capture, fingerprint capture, and liveness detection, which shall be performed during enrolment and every verification. Home Affairs will offer free in-person enrolment at its branches, and private-sector enrolment will include prescribed identity document fees.
