◼️ Deportations threaten schooling for thousands of Zimbabwean pupils: “How will they prepare and sit for these critical examinations if they are forced to relocate now. Imagine after 11 years you have been doing Caps and in your final year of school forced to do the Zimbabwean [syllabus],” said Muchatuta. “What is going to happen is that our children are not going to be able to continue with their education,” Muchatuta said. Since last month, over 60 000 Zimbabweans have returned home following anti-illegal immigration protests in South Africa.

◼️ New laws against invasion of private property in SA: The new bill aims to empower municipalities, state entities, and private property owners to respond more decisively to illegal occupations and evictions in the country. Most notably, it wants to make it an offence to incite others to illegally occupy land, with a R2 million penalty if found guilty of doing so. It was approved by the cabinet in early April 2026 and gazetted for public comment by the middle of that month.

◼️ SA must say goodbye to petrol taxes: The taxes added to fuel prices in South Africa urgently require review, with the Road Accident Fund facing heavy scrutiny and the general fuel levy not being used for its intended purpose. Rob acknowledged that the general fuel levy (GFL) was not ring-fenced for road maintenance, which he described as problematic. “But that was a political decision taken several decades ago. The government could reverse it if they wished, but it seems that general spending priorities rank higher than road maintenance,” he said.
