Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ US sanctions on ANC officials ‘inevitable’: At the weekend, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Lamola gave his US counterpart, Rubio, a piece of his mind in response to the latter’s recent attack on SA. “We do not seek your approval for our path. Our path is our own, chosen by our people and guided by our sovereign laws. But we do seek, and we will always extend, a hand of respectful partnership,” Lamola said in his letter to Rubio.

◼️ Woman who founded a South African sweets empire out of her kitchen: She spent months in her kitchen trying to recreate the sweets, but the results were terrible, with batches either coming out much too hard or too soft. Williams nearly abandoned the entire project. However, a year later, at a market in Hammamat, Tunisia, she tasted the best nougat of her life. She managed to track down the local nougat maker, who was operating out of a garage.

◼️ 3 persons of interests identified in “Witness D” murder case: “At this stage, we do believe that the white Chevrolet bakkie that was abandoned in Alexandra township, right here in Johannesburg fits the description of the vehicle that we have been looking for,” he said. According to a police preliminary investigation, the vehicle was abandoned on Saturday morning by two men, just hours after Van Der Merwe was shot and killed on Friday evening.

◼️ Big change for electricity prices: This is according to new court-imposed annual timelines for the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) — a ruling civil rights organisation AfriForum has welcomed. “AfriForum achieved a decisive victory in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria this week in its case against Nersa,” it said. “AfriForum’s application for the implementation of specific timelines for all future municipal electricity tariff applications was granted.”

◼️ Bad news for landlords in SA: Speaking about the rise in tenants missing their rent payments, Hollo noted that the rental market is under pressure, with the percentage of tenants making no rent payment rising from 6% in Q2 to 6.15% in Q3. He added that this is happening at a time when household budgets are tightening, leaving many tenants with very little room to manoeuvre.
