Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼
◼️ Have a heart for those fellow Africans: The truth of it is that most people from other African countries are not in our country because they want to be. Some may be criminals, but the vast majority are not. They’re here because their countries, Zimbabwe, Eswatini/Swaziland and Mozambique, have been captured by corrupt elites who have ruined local economies, stolen public wealth, taken it all for themselves, and made it impossible for ordinary people to live and make a living in their own agriculturally and minerally rich countries.

◼️ Nearly 16 000 arrested as SAPS intensifies fight against crimes against children: The solution-driven dialogue created an opportunity for learners, SAPS and stakeholders to engage openly on the consequences of teenage pregnancy, the legal implications of statutory rape and the lasting impact these crimes can have on the lives and futures of young people. Delivering the keynote address, Lekhele encouraged learners to make informed choices, speak out against abuse and report criminal conduct.

◼️ Forced removals and R30,000 fines for some homeowners with solar: “We’re seeing a worrying trend in which homeowners view solar as a ‘set-and-forget’ solution to load shedding,” he said. “In reality, though, an uncertified or unregistered system isn’t an asset; it’s a legal and financial liability that can derail a property sale or leave a family exposed if disaster strikes.” One of the biggest risks facing homeowners is the growing crackdown on unregistered solar systems.

◼️ Zero cybercrime investigation training for police detectives: Despite that, Schickerling said SAPS was failing to equip detectives with the specialised skills required to investigate these crimes. “The consequences are serious. Without refresher training on the chain of custody for digital evidence, detectives are at risk of mishandling it,” she said. “Simple acts like turning on a seized phone without a Faraday bag will alter metadata, making evidence inadmissible.”

◼️ Why transport costs are a barrier for young jobseekers: According to Statistics South Africa, the unemployment rate among people aged 15 to 34 stands at 45.8%, with approximately 4.7 million young South Africans actively seeking work but remaining unemployed. While a lack of jobs remains the most visible challenge, experts say many young people also face hidden obstacles that make it difficult to access employment opportunities.
