Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ ‘I respect the press, but…’: “I appreciate the work of many journalists and the media’s role in society. However, the Bill of Rights protects human dignity under our Constitution. When I addressed the ad hoc committee in Parliament last week, I urged lawmakers to ensure the state protects these rights – even against violations by journalists. I have personally been a victim of such violations, and the pattern adopted by some journalists is worrying,” Mkhwanazi said.

◼️ R242 billion win for South Africa: President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed a Team Europe investment package of nearly €12 billion (R242 billion), announced at the Global Gateway Forum in Brussels. This builds on the €4.7 billion package from the EU-South Africa Summit in March. The partnership focuses on South Africa’s priorities, including investment, clean energy transition, skills and technology, connectivity, and job creation, as highlighted by the President in his recent letter.

◼️ 1,000 jobs lost every day for 17 years in SA: “More than 12 million South Africans want work but cannot find a job. For 17 years, 1,000 people have joined the unemployment queue every day,” said Ann Bernstein, executive director of the CDE. “Despite this, the government continues to avoid the essential reforms that would change the country’s trajectory.”

◼️ Tshwane’s Afrikaner-only enclave: The stand-off continues between the City of Tshwane and the Kleinfontein informal settlement as the Freedom Front Plus and a new political movement back the Afrikaner-only settlement near Rayton, about 30km east of Pretoria.

◼️ SA debates changing name of Kruger park: For Afrikaners, descendants of 17th Century European settlers, Kruger is revered as a hero who led the resistance against British colonialism. But for the majority of South Africans, he is viewed as a relic of the country’s racist past, as he was one of those responsible for driving black Africans off their land and excluding them from having a say in running the republic.
