Police in Canada are looking into a big gold robbery at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport after millions of dollars in gold and other valuables went stolen.

According to authorities, thieves stole more than $14 million in gold and other valuables on Monday.

Regional Police Inspector Stephen Duivesteyn told the Toronto Star newspaper that a container was stolen after being unloaded from a plane at a cargo facility.

“What I can say is that the container [had] a high-value shipment,” Duivesteyn told the Star. “It did contain gold but was not exclusive to gold and contained other items of monetary value.”

Duivesteyn said the robbery was “very rare” and no arrests had been made.

“Our investigators have got their eyes open to all avenues,” he said. “… We’re looking at all angles on how this item was stolen.”

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority said in a statement that thieves accessed the public side of a warehouse leased to a third party and outside its primary security line.

Prior to being transferred overseas, Canadian gold is commonly stored at Pearson Airport. The airport receives almost half of the air freight carried by Canada.

Gold bars worth around $2.5 million today were stolen from the plant in 1952, but no suspects were ever found.

The robbery on Monday is among the largest in Canadian history, rivaled only by the theft of 9,600 barrels of maple syrup from a Quebec warehouse in 2011 and 2012, worth at $15 million to $20 million.
