Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:👇🏼

◼️ Trump administration proposes welcoming thousands more Afrikaners to U.S.: The Trump administration has proposed raising the cap on refugee admissions for fiscal year 2026 to 17,500 specifically for White South Africans. The proposal is outlined in an emergency determination sent to Congress that was obtained by CNN. Last year, the administration restricted the number of refugees allowed to enter the country annually to 7,500, with a focus on White South Africans, slashing the previous year’s ceiling of 125,000 and excluding some of the world’s most vulnerable populations.

Cachalia, who made these remarks during an interview with eNCA, stated that impeaching Ramaphosa would destabilise the country, adding that the ANC and its partners in the GNU must protect him.

◼️ Huge win for doctors and private healthcare in SA: The Constitutional Court of South Africa has axed Sections 36 to 40 of the National Health Act, declaring them unconstitutional. The sections in question deal with the government’s “Certificate of Need”, which is a licensing system for healthcare providers in the country. At its core, the certificate acted as a mandate for where healthcare facilities and healthcare providers could operate or expand.

Eskom stated recently that the overall outstanding debt from municipalities had increased to over R111-billion and that it would pursue more so-called Distribution Agency Agreements with smaller municipalities, despite objections to the arrangement, including a legal challenge.
