Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼
◼️ Top cop Masemola faces court as Saps admits public trust has ‘eroded’: “For us as the Saps, this is a defining moment, not only for the National Commissioner of the Saps, but for the organisation as a whole, for the mere fact that the National Commissioner is appearing on the Medicare24 tender. “It is a test on our commitment to accountability, and it is a test for our respect for the rule of law. As an organisation, we have always stood for the principle that no one is above the law, irrespective of rank, position, and status.

◼️ State wants jail terms, R2m fines for inciting land invasions: Under the proposed amendments, people who organise land invasions, even where no money changes hands, could face fines and imprisonment, not exceeding two years. The criteria courts must consider when granting eviction orders would also be revised. The proposed amendment, already approved by the cabinet, seeks to shield private property owners and municipalities from unlawful land and property grabs — the prevalence of which has hurt the country’s property rights image.

◼️ More pain for people wanting to install rooftop solar: City Power has introduced a revised six-step application process for Small Scale Embedded Generation (SSEG), which applies to residents and businesses wanting to install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. The utility said the changes are intended to streamline approvals and ensure compliance with municipal regulations, stressing that no solar installation can legally proceed without prior authorisation.

◼️ Palestinian flag row erupts: A row has erupted at Houghton Golf Club after a man claimed he was kicked out for displaying a Palestinian flag on his car. But management insists the issue is about neutrality, not politics. A frequent visitor to the club claimed he was abruptly barred, not for misconduct, but for displaying the flag. The incident quickly went viral and sparked debate about political expression at private venues.

◼️ Man from Benoni who pioneered the world’s first online booking system: Tucker was part of a group that queued for three days and three nights outside His Majesty Theatre in Johannesburg to secure tickets. “We slept on the pavement, played cards, and made great friends,” he said. Despite being third in line, when Tucker got to the counter, the cashier informed him that all the cheap “seven and sixpence” tickets had been sold out. “When I started Show Service, my father didn’t speak to me for a year, as he thought that with my chartered accountancy degree I should make more of myself than a ticket seller.”
