Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼
◼️ Police’s R600-million plan to stop national shutdown turning into July 2021-style riot: Cachalia emphasised that authorities would not take any chances that could allow a repeat of the 2021 riots. “We don’t want a repeat of that, so we’re not going to take any chances,” he said. “We have good information about the levels of mobilisation and the places of mobilisation around this issue.” The SAPS will deploy officers to hotspots, while Ministry of Police officials will engage provincial and city leaders.

◼️ Warning about new bill and private property rights in SA: The bill seeks to empower municipalities, state entities, and private property owners to respond more decisively to illegal occupations and evictions. Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane said the amendments will strengthen the Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act of 1998. The move comes amid a rise in unlawful land and building occupations by individuals and organised groups across South Africa.

◼️ ‘A response to fear’: Immigration expert Stefanie de Saude Darbandi warned that it sets a precedent that should worry every South African, not just foreign nationals. “If a private group can declare its own deadline and intimidate people into leaving with no legal basis whatsoever, that undermines the rule of law for everyone.” She warned that the same logic used to target foreign nationals today can just as easily be turned against any group tomorrow, which does not solve anything.

◼️ B-BBEE compliance needs real power, not just a black face: Johannes (the applicant) was years ago appointed to the company so that it could be B-BBEE compliant and continue securing certain work and contracts within the mining industry. Judge Fourie commented that it is unfortunate that it seems the only reason why Johannes was approached was because of his race and to serve as a proverbial “tick-box” for the company to secure certain contracts.

◼️ Can South Africa build NHI while failing to employ its own doctors? Many of these doctors were trained through government bursary programmes funded by taxpayers. Despite this investment and commitment, many remain without posts while healthcare facilities continue to operate under severe staffing pressures. The explanation most commonly provided is that provincial health departments face budget constraints and cannot create or fill additional medical officer posts. While fiscal pressures are undoubtedly real, South Africans are entitled to ask whether these constraints are solely the result of economic realities or whether years of financial mismanagement have played a significant role.
