◼️ ‘Xenophobic violence’, building hijackers and drugs: Nigeria has urged South Africa to do more to prevent xenophobic attacks on African migrants, as the two countries meet this week to try to cool tensions. Foreign nationals have come under attack, and foreign-owned shops looted over the last few months, as some South Africans blame immigrants for problems such as crime and unemployment.

◼️ The billionaire who could become SA’s next President: While the mining, finance and football tycoon has dodged questions about his political aspirations, speculation about machinations to get him to lead the African National Congress (ANC) persists. Even without a firm commitment one way or the other from Motsepe, polling shows he is the most popular choice among the ANC’s most likely candidates. Motsepe was born in 1962 in Soweto, one of seven children of the late Augustine and Margaret Motsepe.

◼️ ‘We can’t march forever’: “We can’t march forever,” says controversial former Ukhozi FM presenter and anti-migrant activist Ngizwe Mchunu as he hits back at the March and March movement after it suspended its working relationship with him pending an internal investigation. The movement said it had decided to cut ties with Mchunu after its leadership found evidence of alleged interference aimed at weakening the organisation.

◼️ SA dumping 45,000 tonnes of medical waste every year: The group also noted that items such as syringes and infusion sets have significant recycling potential when separated immediately at the point of use, thereby preventing their mixing with hazardous waste. However, implementing recycling programmes in a hospital setting can present several challenges. Many plastics are automatically classified as healthcare risk waste (HCRW) due to their potential contact with bodily fluids.

◼️ Important information about electric fence rules in SA: “This policy attempts to control the appearance of boundary walls and fences and the installation of security devices on top of walls and fences.” The policy sets out rules for the location and mounting of electric fences, height restrictions, the location of freestanding electric fences, and getting approval for installation from the city council. The policy also requires that all electric fencing erected in the city must comply with the regulations stipulated in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and SABS regulations.
