Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼

◼️ More Standard Bank clients come forward as fraud claims near R60m in losses: After the story of Anastasia Radebe, who lost R60,000 to fraudulent transactions, more Standard Bank clients across South Africa and Eswatini have come forward with strikingly similar accounts. Their claims follow a consistent pattern. Large unauthorised withdrawals. No record of One-Time Pins (OTPs) being received. And, in many cases, a response from the bank that customers describe as formulaic and dismissive.

◼️ Here’s how many murders are successfully investigated by police: The vast majority of murders are not only going unsolved, but cases are going cold in the earliest stages of investigations. Gauteng received the highest funding allocation with R75 million, with 12 of its 15 stations listed having a detection rate below 10%. “Detectives cannot investigate murder properly without vehicles, phones, computers, forensic support, crime intelligence, functioning ICT systems, proper docket management and prosecution-led case building,” police portfolio committee chair Ian Cameron lamented.

◼️ Big changes for imported products in SA: “Many consumers assume products are safe if they are widely available in stores or labelled as cosmetics, even though some contain banned or harmful ingredients,” Jacobs-Alfred said. South Africa has strict regulations governing skin-lightening products, including bans on mercury and hydroquinone and restrictions on advertising. However, covert marketing and illegal markets continue to exist by using indirect language to avoid explicit claims.

◼️ Important court ruling for certain marriages in SA: In a 2026 decision, the Constitutional Court ruled that both customary and civil marriages receive equal legal recognition, making it difficult for individuals in customary marriages to enter into antenuptial agreements after marriage. The law says that spouses in customary marriages cannot enter into an antenuptial agreement after attempting to convert to a civil marriage in South Africa; they would need an antenuptial agreement from the start of the arrangement.

◼️ WhatsApp support ending on these phones in SA: Thanks to its data-based messaging and calling, which are cheaper than traditional calls and SMS, WhatsApp has become nearly ubiquitous on smartphones in South Africa. A large proportion of the market uses budget or used Android devices, some of which may be affected by the upcoming change.
