Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:👇🏼

◼️ SA’s cost-of-living crisis: Cost-of-living pressures are forcing many households to cut back on discretionary spending, cancel subscriptions, reduce medical spending, and even move into smaller homes to better manage their finances. Inflation remains the dominant concern for consumers, with 79% of respondents ranking it among their top three worries.

◼️ Manhunt launched: A multidisciplinary South African Police Service (Saps) task team has been activated to hunt down the killers of March and March Gauteng leader Andile Somgaxa. ◼️ What the law says about migrants’ right to healthcare in SA: Section 27 of the Constitution states that “everyone has the right to have access to healthcare services”, not only citizens. It is widely understood that “everyone” means the constitutional protections extend to foreign nationals, including refugees, asylum seekers and, in special circumstances, undocumented migrants.

◼️ The shadow state robbing SA of R84.6 billion every year: The research firm terms this the “shadow state”, which operates its own supply chains, distribution networks, and enforcement arms. In South Africa, this economy is dominated by the illicit cigarette trade, which is one of the largest markets in the world for tobacco. Frans Cronje Private Clients estimates that up to 75% of all cigarettes sold in South Africa are now illicit. This means they are untaxed, smuggled, or undeclared.

◼️ Change coming for security guards scanning people’s driving licences: Acts such as taking copies (digital or otherwise) of ID documents, home addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, or employer details were considered non-compliant under the code. Visitors who believe their private data is at risk can report non-compliance to the regulator. Companies and bodies could then be charged for breaching POPIA and potentially face fines or criminal prosecution.
