◼️ BRICS bank throws R16 billion lifeline to SA: The New Development Bank (NDB) has approved a $1 billion (R16 billion) loan to South Africa for upgrading infrastructure in its eight metros, home to about 22 million people. The decision was made during a board meeting at the bank’s headquarters in Shanghai.

◼️ DA leader asks Ramaphosa to remove John Steenhuisen as minister: The DA has reshuffled its team in the government of national unity (GNU), with Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen demoted to deputy minister. Party leader Geordin Hill-Lewis announced a series of Cabinet changes aimed at sharpening the party’s impact in national governance and delivering on the mandate of 3.5 million voters.

◼️ Diabetes emerges as SA’s leading killer: According to death notification forms processed by Stats SA, diabetes was the leading underlying natural cause of death in 2023, accounting for 27,692 deaths — about 5.8% of all recorded fatalities. This was the second consecutive year that diabetes had topped the list of natural causes of death in the country. Diabetes is having a particularly devastating impact on women. More than 16,000 women die from the disease annually.

◼️ Cape Town has the worst port in the world: Chinese ports, in particular, dominated the rankings, with the country having six of the ten best-performing ports in the world, including the top two. The Middle East also had a strong showing, with ports from Oman and Qatar being in the top ten. Morocco’s Tanger Med was the only African port in the top 10.

◼️ Stop using Facebook and Instagram passwords for bank accounts: Criminals often use social engineering techniques to trick users into sharing their social media login credentials. This can involve spoofed websites that mimic the social media platform’s official websites, which they use to phish for users’ details. One good example of this was the so-called “Hackdemic” that hit South African Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram users between 2022 and 2024.
