◼️ Police look on as anti-foreigner marchers vandalise businesses: In response to the recent unrest, a broad coalition of community organisations, trade unions, civil society groups and concerned citizens has launched the Siyafana Sonke Campaign, a national initiative aimed at confronting xenophobia, defending social cohesion and challenging what it describes as the scapegoating of migrants. On 23 June, the campaign wrote to President Cyril Ramaphosa requesting an urgent meeting to discuss the escalating anti-migrant mobilisation and its impact on communities across the country.

◼️ Joburg’s massive fixed charge increase: The City of Joburg has successfully defended its increased water demand management levy against AfriForum in the Johannesburg High Court. Starting from 1 July, residents will pay a 67% higher levy, rising from R65 to approximately R124, including VAT. This fixed monthly charge applies to all water connections, regardless of usage.

◼️ Starlink denied entry by SA’s neighbour: Namibia rejected more than 600 appeals against its decision to deny trillionaire Elon Musk’s Starlink a license to operate in the country, including a challenge brought by the satellite internet provider. Of the 624 reconsideration requests, only two met the jurisdictional threshold for review, the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia said Monday.

◼️ Salaries in SA hit two-year low as net pay drops to R21k: Salaries in May 2026 have slipped to their weakest level in two years, according to the latest PayInc data, pointing to renewed pressure on household incomes in South Africa. But there could be some relief on the horizon for the local economy in the coming months. “The combination of higher living costs, weaker confidence and ongoing uncertainty is creating a difficult environment for both consumers and businesses,” says Elize Kruger, independent economist. .

◼️ Warning about guards scanning driving licences at estates and offices: The draft makes it clear that guards and digital surveillance at gated accesses should not collect “excessive” data from visitors. “POPIA protects the personal information of all the data subjects, including but not limited to visitors, employees and residents who enter through gated access entry points,” the document stated.
