Wed 29 April 2026:

Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ Gauteng overcrowding crisis: The province now has 2 835 168 pupils enrolled in its public schools, more than double the 1 408 237 recorded in 1995. That figure grows by roughly 50 000 pupils every year, placing enormous pressure on infrastructure that was never built to absorb this volume. The current average pupil-teacher ratio in Gauteng is thought to be at 70:1, far more than the recommended 40:1.

◼️ Large technology wholesaler in SA hit by data breach: Technology distributor Esquire notified customers on Wednesday that it had suffered a data breach affecting a portion of the SQL database powering its API data feed. Established in 1999 in Pretoria as a small business that wholesaled technology products to South African businesses, Esquire has grown into one of the largest distributors in the country.

◼️ New solar rules in SA could end up in court: The city is wrapping private energy solutions in so much paperwork that it’s punishing the very residents and businesses trying to reduce pressure on a failing grid,” Duvenage said in a recent interview. He also questioned the rationale behind the changes. Duvenage said thousands of solar installations have already been completed without harming the grid.

◼️ Major threat to KFC and McDonald’s in SA: Weight-loss and weight-management medicines, such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, are becoming increasingly popular in South Africa. These types of medicine have seen their use skyrocket in South Africa, with their impact beginning to be felt in how much individuals consume and what they consume.

A route linking family visits, holidays and long-haul trips east. Now, it’s been recognised as the best on the planet. The Garden Route offers more than scenery. Activities range from hiking and kayaking to bungee jumping at the Bloukrans Bridge, one of the most famous in the world.
