◼️ National shutdown: Following its June 30 protests, the group warned that it would launch another mass action after three months. That mass action is now set to take place on Wednesday, 30 September. It said that marches will take place in Pretoria, Joburg, Durban, Cape Town, and other major cities. The new deadline, which is arbitrary and not supported by any official government channels, has reignited fears of xenophobic violence against foreign workers in South Africa. In his weekly letter to the nation, regarding the growing perception of South Africa’s unfriendliness to foreigners, the president said that the country refuses to be “defined by xenophobia and intolerance”.

◼️ Foreign-owned spaza shops could face SARS scrutiny as tax net widens: Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has confirmed that the revenue service is targeting businesses in the informal economy as part of a drive to expand the country’s tax base, with the taxi industry and e-hailing services already identified as priority sectors. “SARS continues to broaden the tax base by improving registration, filing and payment, where tax compliance remains low. This includes the informal economy and the taxi industry,” Godongwana said.

◼️ Suspended Police Minister paid R3.163 million to sit at home: Acting Minister of Police, Firoz Cachalia, revealed that suspended Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, received R3.163 million to sit at home for over a year. President Cyril Ramaphosa placed Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu on a special leave of absence on Sunday, 13 July 2025. Mchunu was accused of executive overreach and political interference within the South African Police Service operations.

◼️ Targeted United States sanctions on politicians: Former Sibanye Stillwater CEO Neal Froneman has urged the United States to apply targeted sanctions against specific government officials and individuals. ◼️ D-day for people with rooftop solar in SA: Today is the last day for Eskom Direct customers with rooftop solar to register their systems with the power utility, or they may be forced to pay the full price of a smart electricity meter. However, Eskom has created a “carrot and stick” mechanism to encourage customers to register. If customers register before the deadline, Eskom pays for their multi-thousand-rand smart meter. Those who register after the deadline will be forced to pay for the quote, meter, meter box, cabling, installation, and connection fees.
