HEZBOLLAH INSISTS IT HAS ‘LEGITIMATE RIGHT’ TO DEFEND AGAINST ISRAEL

Middle East World

Thu 06 November 2025:

While Lebanon is bound by a ceasefire, it is not obligated to be drawn into political negotiations with Israel, the group said in a statement.

“We affirm our legitimate right to resist occupation and aggression and to stand by our army and our people to protect the sovereignty of our country,” it said.

Last week, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun instructed the army to confront any Israeli incursion into southern Lebanon after Israeli forces crossed the border and killed a municipal employee, despite a US-brokered ceasefire.

Lebanon’s government is pushing to disarm the group, a move rejected by Hezbollah. Israel, which still has troops stationed in five areas in southern Lebanon, has threatened to intensify attacks on Hezbollah if the Lebanese government does not succeed in disarming it.

“The issue of the exclusivity of arms is not to be discussed in response to foreign demands or Israeli blackmail, it must be addressed nationally through consensus on a comprehensive strategy for security, defence and the protection of national sovereignty,” it said.

Hezbollah also said it’s exercising its right to defend itself against “an enemy that imposes war on our country, does not stop its attacks, and seeks to subjugate our state”.

A report a week ago claimed that Lebanon’s army had destroyed so many Hezbollah weapons it “ran out of explosives” to destroy more.

Reuters claimed “Lebanon’s army has blown up so many Hezbollah arms caches that it has run out of explosives, as it races to meet a year-end deadline to disarm the Shi’ite militia in the south of the country under a cease-fire agreed with Israel, two sources told Reuters.”

The report added that “according to the US military, the Lebanese Army has cleared nearly 10,000 rockets and 400 missiles since the ceasefire in late November 2024. However, “sources” claimed that the Army only acts against sites that have been reported to UNIFIL and to the Ceasefire Monitoring Committee for fear of clashing with Hezbollah, which could lead to civil war.”

Now, Al-Arabiya reported on November 6 that the Lebanese army is submitting a report on weapons control. “The Lebanese government is preparing today, Thursday, to discuss the army’s second monthly report on its mission south of the Litani River, in a session chaired by President Joseph Aoun in the presence of Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. The agenda includes 35 items, the first of which is the army’s report on limiting weapons.”

The report will “include information on the completion of the deployment plan in southern Litani, with the first phase of the plan to end by the end of this year.” It says that the second phase of the weapons collection plan is limited to the area north of the Litani River. Sources said that the “army’s second report on the weapons control plan focuses on its operations south of the Litani River, while the remaining part of it is allocated to the area north of the Litani River.”

Al-Arabiya claims that Hezbollah has confirmed that it supports the army’s plan. This seems in contrast to Hezbollah statements saying the group won’t disarm. “The [Hezbollah] party is cooperating with the army in the area south of the Litani River.” Hezbollah’s MP Mohammad Raad claimed that the group is working with the Lebanese army commander.

According to Israeli reports, US envoy Tom Barrack gave the army a deadline ending at the end of November to bring about a change in the situation regarding Hezbollah’s weapons, saying, ‘If this does not happen, Israel will be able to launch attacks and the United States will understand that.
