Huawei moving on 5G

Sat 02 November 2019:

Major state telecom operators are rolling out 5G wireless advances in China as the country races to close a technology gap with the United States amid a bruising trade war.

The new-generation telecommunication networks move data at blazing speeds, promising economic and technological advantages to countries where they are deployed.

US regulators earlier this week proposed rules to block telecom carriers from buying from Chinese tech companies Huawei and ZTE, and to remove any of their equipment already in place to “safeguard the nation’s communications networks.”

The US Federal Communications Commission said the rules — to be voted on November 19 — were part of an initiative to “safeguard the nation’s communications networks.”

Huawei sold 100,000 Mate 30 5G units

Huawei may be facing a tough time in the US what with the ban and everything, but things are quite the opposite for the company in its hometown. Huawei Mate 30 5G and Mate 30 Pro 5G went on sale in China today and the company sold 100,000 units in just one minute. The 5G variants proved to be a hit in China just as much as the non-5G models, allowing Huawei to rake in CNY 500 million per minute during the sale.

The 5G versions of the Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro will now go on sale on November 5 in China. The phones are yet to go on sale in international markets. The ongoing ban on Huawei by the US government means the Mate 30 series can only launch outside China without Google apps and services, which comes as a major blow for the company.

In China, however, the Mate 30 series is seeing a fantastic response. The company announced early last month that it sold 1 million units of the non-5G Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro since they went on sale on September 26. Huawei plans to sell 20 million units of the Mate 30 this year, but it will be interesting to see how the phones perform outside of China.

Huawei Mate 30 5G starts at CNY 4,999 (approx Rs 50,000) while the Mate 30 Pro 5G costs CNY 6,899 (approx Rs 69,500). The Mate 30 phones tout a Kirin 990 SoC with an integrated 5G modem and 40W fast charging support. They flagships also tout powerful 40MP quad cameras and large batteries.

The Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro are expected to launch in India, but Huawei is yet to reveal an exact date. Without Google apps and services, Huawei may struggle to sell the Mate 30 series globally. But things look mighty good at home.
